REFUGE TRAIL WORK SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 10TH AND 11TH
Calling All Volunteers:
The WMCC has scheduled the 2005 Mt. Scott Trail Project for Saturday and Sunday, September 10th and 11th at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. The project is being sponsored by the Access Fund as one of its official 2005 Adopt-a-Crag events.
With the Narrows Trail in good condition after our many years of service, we've decided it's time to make some much needed improvements to the Lower Mount Scott Trail. This is the original "social trail" that developed over many years of travel to this popular climbing destination. The trail has never been improved, and our efforts will focus on upgrading the trail to eliminate erosional concerns and make it more user friendly.
Due to limited parking at the Lower Mount Scott area, volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. each morning at the Mount Scott summit parking lot and will be shuttled to and from the work area. Work will last until 2 p.m. with a break for lunch. The remainder of the day is open for climbing or hiking.
All necessary tools will be provided by the Refuge. Volunteers will need to bring work gloves, water bottles, trail lunch, sunscreen and insect repellent. Dress for the work and be prepared for the weather.
Refuge Manager Sam Waldstein has once again granted the WMCC a Special Use Permit allowing volunteers to camp Friday and Saturday nights without charge at the Fawn Creek Campground at the base of Mt. Lincoln. For those of you who weren't around twenty years ago when camping was allowed throughout the Refuge, this is a valuable opportunity to experience the solitude and grandeur of camping in this scenic area.
PLEASE VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME!
The success of this project is dependent on a good group of enthusiastic volunteers. To join the effort, please fill out the form below.
If you know of others who are interested in participating, please pass along this information to them.
Volunteers will receive additional information concerning the trail work and camping arrangements at the beginning of September.
PLEASE NOTE
The WMCC's Fawn Creek camping permit is limited to 30 volunteers. Reservations will be made in the order in which volunteers apply. Since the Fawn Creek Campground is a combination-locked special use area, in order to secure a campsite and gain access to the area volunteers must register at least 7 days in advance of the project.
For more information on what you can do to help, contact the WMCC.
Thanks in advance for volunteering your time!
